1807 (BD-8) Capped Bust half-eagle, PCGS AU-55
Description:
Expert centering of the planchet at the time of striking has produced a coin with virtually perfect edge beading - a feature often lacking on competing coins. Despite obvious evidence of clashed dies, including inverted shield detail across Liberty's ear, the strike is outstanding and has brought up nearly every possible detail, including very sharp stars. Indeed, there is no proof that this coin actually circulated, as there really is no discernible wear even on the high points, and it is this cataloger's opinion that PCGS net-graded the coin on account of a very light, old cleaning that placed an assortment of hairlines throughout all the fields. Nonetheless, there is a lot of original mint luster remaining, especially within the protected areas, and the coin has toned to a consistent, mellow goldenrod in its entirety.
