Lot Title:

1811 Small 5. NGC AU-58.
|
Description:
|
Classic Mustang Collection. Any of the early half-eagle types dated prior to the Classic Head series of 1834 have to rank among the most coveted of all type coins in the U.S. compendium. In any collectable grade, most examples will command thousands of dollars of value, and examples at or near the mint-state level instill considerable charm and prestige upon a serious collector's cabinet. This 1811 AU-58 example has resided in the consignor's collection for some time, and represents one of the more approachable issues for the "capped bust left" series (Mintage: 99,581). "Small 5" references the numeral in the denomination, as the other reverse shows a "tall 5" instead. Glossy luster permeates the fields and approaches the stars with the frosty flowline texture expected of the near-mint condition. Scarcely any abrasions appear on the obverse, though the less important (to the grade) reverse does show several brief, scattered hairline abrasions throughout the fields. Buttercup-gold patina enriches the eye-appeal without diminishing the luster in any manner, while both sides benefit from unexpectedly sharp design elements. (PCGS# 008109)

A sorely misguided attempt was made to eradicate some old scratches or graffiti from the obverse left field, and perhaps Liberty's cheek as well. Now, those areas have odd texture, and all original... |
