Description:
|
Classic Mustang Collection. In the consignor's collection for a considerable amount of time, this 1798 JR-4 is essentially fresh to the market and comes at a time when problem-free early type dimes of this caliber are practically absent from major auctions. A description of such a pleasing example could start anywhere, but let's begin by noticing how the attractive navy-blue accents gently mingle with predominant graphite-grey patina to muster a reassuring sense of original character. The dies had limited ability to produce sharp details, especially for the obverse, since prominent raised cracks demonstrate overuse of this die, and in turn the stars show restrained detail. Of course, a minimum amount of detail has also escaped to five points of circulation, but this shows merely as modest rub in the hair and at the eagle's head and the points of his feathers. JR-4 is the most available of the 1798 die-marriages, but none of the varieties are common, and as a date, any 18th century dime will prove challenging to the type collector. (PCGS# 999999)
