Lot Title:
1850-O NGC AU-58 CAC.
Description:
New Orleans produced quarter-eagles from 1839 through only 1857, a rather brief emission period. Here is an 1850-O example that exemplifies the weak strike often seen for coins from that southern mint, with the eagle showing details scarcely comparable to the VF level! But the great amount of remaining mint luster assures that this is nearly a mint-state coin, softly detailed due to production and not wear. Both sides are amazingly free from marks, with a nice die clash found on the reverse. (PCGS# 007758)

At the AU level and above, 1850-O commands a significant premium over it's Philadelphia counterpart, though of course the other two branch mints are much scarcer still. Chartreuse-gold surfaces are a... |
