1812 PCGS AU-55.

Description:
|
Any capped-bust gold half-eagle with excellent eye-appeal should be considered a prize, as coins from the series experienced severe attrition, leaving a very limited supply for today's collector, whether as a type or date. Records indicate that 58,087 were struck for 1812, but if even 1% of that number survives today, we may count ourselves fortunate. These were all struck from a single obverse die and two reverse dies, of which this is the more common with a wide denominator. Delightful luster gravitates toward the primary devices and therefore creates a lovely framework for the eye-appeal of this example. Tilting the coin gently under a lamp activates considerable vibrancy within the stars and produces about two-thirds of the original cartwheel effect on the reverse. The relative softness of these early gold pieces permitted stronger strikes than one might expect of such coins, with this one showing highly acceptable definition. Liberty's cap bears the presence of a single tiny carbon spot toward the right, and under certain viewing angles, a narrow old scratch snakes part way down the center of the cap. (PCGS# 008112)
