1812 PCGS MS-62.
|
Description:
|
1812 is a popular choice for the Capped Bust half eagle type as it is one of the more available dates, but this particular variety for the date (BD-1, distinguished by a wide denomination) is far the scarcer of the two known die marriages. The Bass II example of this same variety featured a pronounced die clash and detail not quite as defined as that seen here, so it is your cataloger’s presumption that our coin was struck off of relatively fresh, new dies that had plenty of detail to impart on the planchet. Indeed, every single star on the obverse is incredibly sharp, and each strand of Liberty’s hair is cleanly delineated. There is feather detail on the reverse that is not fully brought up, though incompleteness at “URIB” and through the center of the shield is due to adjustment marks and not strike deficiency. Dentilation is superb and complete.
The availability of this uncirculated early gold half eagle in our auction affords the collector an opportunity to appreciate a rare coin at a level of preservation that is rarely seen outside of first-class coin collections. As you examine this wonderful piece, note the razor-sharp design elements that appear throughout. Liberty’s eye is perfectly detailed, including the pupils and the eyelid, and the ear detail is amazing, with a fully rounded earlobe and inner ear definition that is seldom seen. The clasp is so well struck that the interleaved drapery can actually be seen within its center! Examining this marvelous coin is akin to taking a trip back in time, practically to the day this die was engraved.
The shamrock green color that beautifully complements the lustrous surfaces is indicative of a coin that has seen proper long-term storage. Nevertheless, the grade is defined by mildly abraded fields and a touch of cabinet friction astride Liberty’s cheek and the Eagle’s neck. The obverse is frosty and essentially unblemished by a post-mint issues, but the reverse is very mildly peppered with tiny handling marks.
