Lot Title:
1898 NGC PF-66 Star Ultra Cameo.
Description:
Mintage: 67. Extremity of the contrast on the reverse almost defies belief -- really that is true of either side, since under most viewing conditions, the design elements are separated from the fields by explosive white-on-black intensity. However, for some reason, the eagle's side of the coins seems to take the dramatic presentation to a whole new level of intensity. An imaginary drop of water would never find the bottom of the unfathomably deep fields. The strike over the entire coin is unquestionably as full as it can possibly be. Every single detail is struck with complete sharpness, and fine die-polish lines can even be seen within the eagle's beak. Interestingly, because the central area of a coin is often where weakness is expected, the eye is drawn there, and only upon such close inspection is a single contact mark found, directly at the top of Liberty's ear. Fortunately, the mark somehow avoided disturbing the frost very much, and the abrasion is virtually invisible. It is accompanied by a micro-tick just beneath, and together, these are the only abrasions to be found on the entire coin. Exceedingly light, feathery hairlines dart diagonally through the fields at specific lighting angles, but by no means can they be called a distraction. (Available elsewhere: UCAM proof 1898 quarter-eagle, half-eagle and double-eagle.) (PCGS# 098838)

The NCI grade of MS-64/64 is actually spot-on accurate for a technical grade, but will seem conservative by today's standards that allow for moderate handling at the MS-64 level. This coin is very... |
