Lot Title:
1840-C NGC AU-58.
Description:
Though not as sharp on the obverse as some known examples, the details are quite pleasing throughout, lacking precision only at the curl above Liberty's ear, while the eagle's motif stands up in unusually sharp three-dimensional relief on the reverse. 1840-C had an original mintage of 12,822 pieces and AU or better examples are difficult to locate. NGC has graded 28 at AU-58 and only 14 in the mint-state grades, where price rises dramatically. Luminescent yellow-gold luster beams from the entire coin and is immediately recognizable as classic Charlotte color, and finicky collectors will be pleased with the unmarked surfaces. Only mild friction in the fields reminds us that the coin is lightly circulated, with the obverse also sporting a half-dozen or so tiny black carbon spots. (PCGS# 007718)

Jackson's Branch Mint Gold, mintage: 12,822. Given the way certified coins are graded, this example could be given AU consideration, although it appears as if the high relief areas across the eagle's... |
