Lot Title:
1840-C XF.
Description:
Jackson's Branch Mint Gold, mintage: 12,822. Given the way certified coins are graded, this example could be given AU consideration, although it appears as if the high relief areas across the eagle's wings and at the tip of the coronet will show a little too much rub to allow for upgrade from XF-45. As the first quarter-eagle issued by Charlotte, the 1840-C bears considerable demand by type collectors, and what better way to start out a series than with an attractive two-toned coin? The butter-gold patina displays significant bronze accents that render the details slightly sharper than they really are, and provide depth to the presentation. Aside from a tiny curving scratch drooping downward from the hair bun, the only negative comment that might be made regards some minor greenish accumulation, possibly from an old PVC holder. No other distractions require note, and for that matter, the surfaces are relatively free from all but perhaps a couple of small contact marks. (PCGS# 007718)
This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.

Though not as sharp on the obverse as some known examples, the details are quite pleasing throughout, lacking precision only at the curl above Liberty's ear, while the eagle's motif stands up in... |
