(About The Images)
1799 Small Stars. AU details/cleaned/repaired. 1799 Small Stars. AU details/cleaned/repaired.
Lot Title: 1799 Small Stars. AU details/cleaned/repaired.
Description: The type collector who needs a strong example of an early gold eagle but doesn't want to spend a fortune might well consider bidding on this, a 1799 that isn't without its faults, but still has much to offer. On the positive side, details are very strong and accurately defined by a great strike, with sharpness that is very close to mint-state. This might have been an AU-55 coin overall if not for the accompanying issues. Surfaces are clearly not original, since hairlines dart every which way through the fields. Under closer scrutiny, it becomes evident that the obverse left field has been repaired, possibly to remove graffiti, since the crisscrossing hairlines here are deeper and strongly resemble tooling marks. What appears at first glance to be a small rim ding at 10:00 is actually a nice rim cud. (PCGS# 098562)

This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.
