Lot Title:
1795 Small Eagle. ANACS AU-50.
Description:
Because a mark in the obverse lower right field is the first characteristic to draw attention, it is necessary to allay fears immediately as to its origin. It is in fact clearly a planchet depression, as struck, and does not represent post-mint damage, though some collectors may still find it distracting. Of more concern, the surfaces display an array of feathery hairlines that crisscross through the fields and over the devices, though the coin has yellow patina that helps to downplay their net effect. Sharpness is exactly as predicted by the ANACS AU-50 grade, with only very light wear on the obverse, but minor flattening of the eagle's breast and the upper edge of each wing. One thin scratch through the peak of Liberty's cap needs to be mentioned, but it is barely noticeable without a loupe. (PCGS# 008066)
