Lot Title:
1867 PCGS AU-55.
Description:
1867 is one of the more common three-dollar gold coins across all grades, but of course, any type example for the series is desirable at AU and above. A reasonable amount of luster retains presence at the edges, attenuated by a strike that was originally semi-prooflike, and there is obvious friction in the fields. A near-vertical scratch on Liberty's face must be noted, but it is the only significant detraction. (PCGS# 007988)

Pale butter-gold surfaces feature very little luster, yet it does not seem that this coin was struck with much prooflike character, either. |
