Lot Title:
1865 PCGS AU-53.
Description:
Without doubt, the surfaces at normal viewing distance are prettier than expected of AU-53, with a delicate tinge of prooflike virtue still evident near the rims. Sharpness is also better than expected for the grade, since Liberty's hair displays just mild flatness above her brow and at her lowest curl, so one must look elsewhere to determine why AU-55 wasn't perhaps considered. It turns out that there are a couple of light hairline scratches in the obverse left field, including a longer curving one that progresses over the front of Liberty's profile. On the reverse, there is an additional hairline or two around the denomination. 1865 is one of the scarcer issues in the three-dollar gold series, with an original mintage of 1,140, and technical considerations aside, most collectors are likely to deem this a desirable example, given the pleasing presentation outside overly fussy scrutiny. Mintage: 1140. Evidence of cleaning remains elusive even under a loupe, and one senses that enough attempts at resubmission would eventually garner a proper straight-grade. Regardless, the low Civil... |
