1873 (WB-101) no arrows, open 3 Fine 1873 (WB-101) no arrows, open 3 Fine
Lot Title: 1873 (WB-101) no arrows, open 3 Fine
Description: Population reports suggest that in ALL grades, fewer than forty examples of the 1873 "no arrows, open 3" have been certified, assuming a handful of regrades or so. The coin is just plain rare, and the requirement for completion of certain album sets spells instant and insatiable demand for all examples extant. Auction records are almost comically sparse, with collectors lucky if a coin or two comes to the market each year.

Here is a stunning example, not so because of a wildly inflated grade or crazy toning, but rather because it is just such a phenomenally nice, original example that has never been molested nor "enhanced" in any way. Honest circulation has placed the ideal level of tan-grey toning in the fields, and dove-grey accents across the details, with those marvelous fields completely immune from distraction. A couple of circulation marks shall be found at 12:30 and 1:00, between Liberty's head and the cap atop the pole, but they are too remote from the primary focal points to provide distraction. All the other tiny ticks and handling marks are absolutely trivial and entirely expected of a commercially used half-dollar. There is no doubt that the coin is headed directly for certification and inclusion in someone's registry set, and it is almost unfortunate that such an esteemed rarity's destiny is to become a holder-with-a-number, but at least it will be appreciated. "In God We Trust" is fully legible on the reverse, and odds are that it will grade a touch higher than the F-12 grade assigned here, despite a weak LIBERTY on the shield. But old-time grading standards are sometimes best for an old-time rarity, and this is definitely it. (PCGS# 006337)

This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.
