Lot Title:
1861-S ANACS F-12.
Description:
Mintage for the 1861-S eagle is shown as only 15,500, which is low even for a Civil War gold coin, and the few pieces that remain today are almost all well circulated. The present offering displays innumerable tiny contact marks, and it seems likely that each side has been lightly polished, though the ANACS insert does not make any reference to the glossy surfaces. Interestingly, nearly every example known also shows excess contact marks, and this should not necessarily be taken as a deterrent to the interested collector. (PCGS# 008634)
