Lot Title:
1861-S NGC AU-58.
Description:
A delightful specimen of a major rarity within the Civil War era for this series. This high grade specimen should present an important acquisition opportunity for the connoisseur of nineteenth century branch mint gold issues. Most survivors of the coinage from this mint during the Civil War years received excessive wear during their extended commercial usage. Significantly lustrous with an orange-gold glow, this piece displays only a subdued amount of contact marks, with none being overbearing to the overall appearance of this exceptionally struck example.

Mintage for the 1861-S eagle is shown as only 15,500, which is low even for a Civil War gold coin, and the few pieces that remain today are almost all well circulated. The present offering displays... |
