Lot Title:

1787 Atlee Machin's Mills imitation halfpence (Vlack 18-87C, R.4). NGC XF details/reverse damage.
Description:
The statement of "REV DAMAGE" assigned by NGC references nothing more than a small abrasion on the seated effigy's head, and the original patina assures it of being all but invisible. The coin has been around a lot longer than the grading companies, so is a minor ancient circulation mark really worthy of the "special" designation? Aside from the disclaimer, this copper is remarkably well preserved, and well produced for that matter, considering the furtive conditions under which imitation British currency was produced in America. In fact, details are bold all the way to the extreme edge of each side, quite unlike typical examples that tend to have poor peripheral definition. Incredibly, both sides possess a completely upset rim, and the date is uncompromisingly complete and bold. Browsing old auction catalogs suggest that even examples certified as AU-55 or better are not as nice as this one. Surfaces exhibit charming mahogany-brown color, with walnut patina rubbed down just slightly on the highpoints. (PCGS# 000469)
