Lot Title:
1787 Connecticut Draped Bust, head left. AU.
Description:
As a type coin, it is notoriously difficult to locate finer examples of Connecticut coppers, as crude minting technology, and even cruder raw materials, were inevitably responsible for the aesthetically unattractive examples many collectors are familiar with. Occasionally, a nicer piece makes it's way to market, and the smooth, glossy mahogany-brown surfaces are noticeably attractive for this particular example. The obverse is a little off-center south, with the reverse showing corresponding favor toward the north, and this means the date is entirely on the flan and exceptionally legible. However, the final letter in INDE is very slightly sliced off at the rim, and the effigy's head touches the top edge of the reverse. A few darker patches of surface contamination may be seen on the reverse as well, but these are areas of only minor verdigris, and are almost certainly removable with no harm done to the terrific eye-appeal.
This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.
