Lot Title:

1885 NGC PF-68 Cameo.
|
Description:
|
Perfection is a worthy (if unattainable) goal in the pursuit of extremely high quality proof coinage of the late 19th century. The mint knew how to produce coins of astounding technical excellence, even as measured by today's advanced industrial standards. The era of 1879 through 1890 saw Philadelphia producing silver coinage of particularly notable quality, and this 1885 PF-68 CAMEO is at the pinnacle of existence, as there are none graded higher by any grading service. As expected of the cameo designation, contrast between frosted motifs and the immaculate, reflective fields is marvelous, and easy to appreciate due to a nearly complete lack of toning. A tinge of almond-gold colors the rims, and under a loupe, a couple if darker lines of tone can be found suspended in the obverse right field. They are accompanied by perhaps two of the most trivial hairlines imaginable, the only other surface aberration being a microscopic strikethrough in the field just left of the date. Even among proof Seated Liberty quarters of all dates, there cannot be more than a handful that attain this level of near-perfection. It is a coin suitable for the collector who demands the ultimate possible quality. (PCGS# 085586)

Typically, Philadelphia quarters and half-dollars of the 1880s demonstrate prooflike quality, but such is not the case here. Making a rare appearance is a gem 1885 that exudes unquestionable... |
