(About The Images)
1870 AU Prooflike. 1870 AU Prooflike.
Lot Title: 1870 AU Prooflike.
Description: Business strike three-dollar gold pieces were struck from different dies than the proofs of 1870, yet many examples are known to be prooflike, and that is a characteristic of this example. The remarkably low mintage of only 3500 was hardly even a long enough production run to break in newly polished dies! Cameo contrast can be readily discerned despite as much as ten points of wear, and a number of thin hairlines appear to be incidental, and not pertinent to the eye-appeal.

This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.

1870 ANACS AU details/net XF-40/cleaned.
Fields are harshly cleaned, possibly whizzed with intent to lessen the effect of numerous tiny circulation marks. That is too bad, since sharpness is clearly at the AU-50 level, as described by...
1073The Midwest Summer Sale 2011 on 07/29/2011$1,150.00
1870 PCGS Genuine (AU details/cleaned).
A quick glance is all that's needed to ascertain that the pale reflectivity is not natural for a gold coin like this, considering ten points of wear. But to be fair, the appearance is far from...
775The Midwest Winter Sale on 02/12/2010$1,000.00
1870 XF.
1870 is readily obtained in any circulated condition, yet in this day of ubiquitous slabs, it is unusual to be able to find one that can actually be held and appreciated, free from encumbrance. This...
