(About The Images)
1868 PCGS MS-63. 1868 PCGS MS-63.
Lot Title: 1868 PCGS MS-63.
Description: Without question, arm's-length appraisal benefits appreciation of this lovely three-dollar gold coin, since the flashy semi-prooflike format and very attractive classic gold color are visually striking. The somewhat prooflike effect is most noticeable on the obverse, with Liberty's frosted portrait floating atop swirling molten gold luster, while the reverse displays a more typical brilliant appearance. A mark on Liberty's throat is actually a short strike-through, and there is a thin vertical scratch in the obverse let field, as well as a short horizontal one on the cheek. These are scarcely noticeable at normal viewing distance, and some scattered whispering hairlines are invisible except under magnification. A high survival rate from a short run of just 4,875 pieces means most examples are well struck, and this coin is certainly so. Surprisingly, MS-63 ranks near the pinnacle of grade, since only 20 have been graded higher by PCGS.
