Lot Title:
1786 Connecticut Copper, MBL "Hercules Head" (Miller 5.3-N, R.2) PCGS VF-20.
Description:
The obverse die of this Connecticut variety was also used on Miller 5.3-B.2 and 5.3-G. Known popularly as the "Hercules head", the style of the bust is different from that of other coppers attributed to the Company for Coining Coppers, but this is due to reworking of an existing die, and not to an entirely new obverse. Very appealing, natural dry surfaces characterize this attractive example, and provide a subdued, slightly "matte" appearance due to the microporosity that is usually present for such early coinage. For many astute collectors, the appearance is more attractive than the unnatural glossy appearance seen on many oiled examples, but that is a matter of preference. A little contrast is offered by lightly rubbed design elements that display tan color over leather-brown surfaces.
