Lot Title:
1760 Voce Populi Halfpenny, "VOOE" variety (Nelson 3, Zelinka 7-E, Breen 227, R.3) PCGS VF-25.
Description:
A Dublin (Ireland) button maker issued tokens with the obverse legend VOCE POPULI in place of the regal title, with the term meaning "voice of the people". It is unclear whether this was in reference to Irish support for the Stuart claim to the English throne, or a statement of the need for general political reform. The coins made their way to America along with other Irish issues, and have become a popular type coin in the Colonial series. VOOE as indicated on the PCGS insert is the result of a simple mispunching of the "O" in place of the "C", with the "C" subsequently punched in its proper place. Some examples are seen to have the offending under punch lightly effaced so that the "C" is more correctly defined, but this example is in an earlier die state with the error clearly (mis)spelled out. How PCGS arrived at such a surgically precise "VF-25" grade may be beyond explanation for a coin derived from such primitive production technology, but the planchet stock is of excellent quality and the color exceptionally attractive. However, for the grade level, the laureated portrait is somewhat soft on the major details, and Hibernia's seated figure rather modestly detailed overall.
