Lot Title:

1652 Pine Tree Threepence, "Pellets at Tree Trunk" (Noe-34, Crosby 1-A1, R.4, 17.7gr.) NGC VF-25.
Description:
It remains a mystery as to how a grading service can grade hand-crafted coins like Massachusetts silver with the same exacting assessments as precision-machin-struck silver dollars, but at minimum, the NGC VF-25 grade aptly conveys the fact that this is a choice example. Surfaces exhibit pewter-brown patina that is comfortable and congruent with a coin of this age, and there are only a couple or so of ancient minor scratches, with no obvious signs of abuse. The pine tree side is struck off-center north such that some of MASATHVSETS falls off the flan, while the reverse is much better centered and gives nearly a full presentation of each of the letters in NEW ENGLAND. The terrific centering and detail of this side alone would be enough to assure the coin of superior quality. "Pellets" refers to a raised dot on either side of the base of the pine tree, and aids attribution of Noe-34.
