Lot Title:

1796 With Pole (C-2, R-4+). VG/obverse scratches.
|
Description:
|
That 1796 is a key date in the half-cent series is unquestioned, since the mintage for both varieties was a total of only 1,390 pieces and the survival rate poor. Many remaining examples have severe planchet problems or ugly visual appeal, but the planchet for this example is astoundingly nice -- again, n the context of a 1796. The obverse displays no more than a couple of spots of greenish verdigris, with both sides sporting only very limited signs of corrosion. Detrimental to the eye-appeal is a collection of random hairline scratches that cross the portrait. Individually, they are almost forgivable, being toned the same color as the rest of the coin, but in aggregate, they probably require a grade deduction. VG-8 details and a remarkable opportunity for the collector.
This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.

Two die-marriages exist for 1796, which definitively separates them for Redbook collectors as "no pole" (C-1), and "with pole" (C-2). Though the latter is considered more common, any 1796 half-cent... |
