Lot Title:

1796 No Pole (C-1, B-1, R.6). ANACS GD-6, James A. Stack.
Description:
No example of C-1 is known with perfect dies, thus the obverse bisecting die-crack is always seen. Breen thought that there were about 20 of this die-marriage known in 1983, and common assumption now is that fewer than 30 are known, thus the R.6 rating. Can there be any doubt that the broken obverse die led to a short production run? In addition to absolute scarcity, the "1796 no pole" has long been listed in the RedBook and pursued by type collectors as well as half-cent specialists, leading to enormous demand on a very small population. Even the lowliest example is desirable, and any attractive coin will command a large following in any auction. The James A. Stack (no relation to the Stack's family of coin dealers) example is unquestionably nicer than many, simply because it is generally free from the planchet problems that plague other examples (including several higher in the condition census). The G-6 grade offered by ANACS adequately conveys highly acceptable surface quality, readily visible date and LIBERTY on the obverse, and a reverse that displays a legible USofA and fraction, though HALF CENT in the center is perhaps a third present. There are no rim bumps readily visible on either side.
