Lot Title:

1805 Small 5 - Stems (C-3, R.4). PCGS VF-30.
Description:
A grotesque die bulge in front of the face can't be mistaken for anything other than C-3, confirmed by the upright "A" in HALF. This is a rare (R.5) die marriage, with die-state II readily ascertained by the crumbs of die rust on the right side of the bulge. Naturally, a die defect of that magnitude couldn't help but affect striking characteristics, and obverse definition is poor for a coin commercially graded VF-30. Only the right side of the wreath on the reverse is sharp. Thus, it is difficult to affirm or deny the PCGS VF-30 grade, although several pin scratches should have some detrimental impact on any assessment. On a high note, the planchet and smooth chocolate-brown color are especially nice for a Cohen variety that usually comes worn and/or on poor planchet stock. Thus, all thing considered, this would have to be considered one of the nicer 1805 C-3s, and an EAC 15 grade could put it at or near the condition census.

1805 Small 5 - Stems (C-2, R.6-). PCGS F-15.
Small "5" obverse, and on the reverse, the berry next to "T" in CENT is low. Many C-2s are in low grade, and since the reverse die was bulging, central details on that side are frequently poorly... |
