Lot Title:
1805 Small 5 - Stems (C-2, R.6-). PCGS F-15.
Description:
Small "5" obverse, and on the reverse, the berry next to "T" in CENT is low. Many C-2s are in low grade, and since the reverse die was bulging, central details on that side are frequently poorly defined, which could make it impossible to ascertain the exact position of the berry. Such is not the case here. HALF CENT is indeed weak as Breen mentions, yet the "T" can be seen with little difficulty, as can the neighboring berry. Not only is this a rarity (R.5+ or R.6-, depending on the source) in the half-cent series, but the condition census is quite low. This example features incredibly nice, creamy caramel-brown color, reddening slightly at the date and with a glimpse of a lighter copper-tan crescendo along the reverse right side. Thus, an appropriate net grade will be near congruent with the details grade. PCGS calls this F-15, and as discussed, definition was a problem for many examples -- on the reverse, that is. Thus a more appropriate grade for sharpness could be VG-10+, with a minor deduction for an ancient pinscratch stuck to Liberty's forehead, leading to a net EAC 10 grade. That would still be plenty enough to put this coin into an early copper census.

1805 Small 5 - Stems (C-3, R.4). PCGS VF-30.

A grotesque die bulge in front of the face can't be mistaken for anything other than C-3, confirmed by the upright "A" in HALF. This is a rare (R.5) die marriage, with die-state II readily... |
