Lot Title:
1805 Medium 5 - Stemless (C-1, R.1). NGC MS-64 BN.
Description:
A medium "5" in the date with the flag obviously recut, no stems on the reverse, and die-state II. Steely cobalt iridescences amplifies the pleasing allure of fine, frosty mint luster in the fields, with depth provided by embers of mint red glowing around the devices. Many ultrafine scratches on the cheek could be slide marks, though they are situated at odd angles in that case, but the slab allows discovery of no other abrasions. Sharpness on the reverse is particularly good, apparently because of the earlier dies, while Liberty's highest relief hair strands show just a hint of perceptible softness under a glass.
