Lot Title:
1795 Plain Edge, Punct. Date (C-3, R.5+). PCGS VF-25.
Description:
"1795" is wide and called the "punctuated date" because of an elongated die chip between the bases of "17", while the reverse has five berries left and four right, one on each side of the bow. The rare early die-state, both sides are perfect, and HALF CENT is clear. This is the Cohen plate coin for C-3, as can be proven by comparison of spots and a trio of scratches across the portrait shown on the plate. It is small wonder this was selected to illustrate this rare (R.5) die marriage. Each side is dominated by pleasing caramel-brown color, occasionally spotted by trivial hints of corrosion, with one spot been removed from "A" in STATES. What can appear to be a number of tiny black spots from arm's length turn out to be tiny fissures in the planchet under closer inspection, highly reminiscent of such fissures seen on Vermont, Connecticut and other colonials. As plated, three or so nearly parallel scratches fling across Liberty's portrait and meet the far right rim, with a couple or so very light hairline scratches in the vicinity of the date. Undoubtedly, this coin is well up in the condition census even when appropriately net graded from the PCGS VF-25 opinion.
