Lot Title:

1804 Crosslet 4 - Stemless (C-12, R.2). PCGS MS-64 BN.
|
Description:
|
Crosslet "4" somewhat high and no stems on the wreath for an early die-state C-12, with clear clash marks behind Liberty's tresses. Housed in a PCGS rattler holder, the commercial grade seems mildly conservative in light of gradeflation over the past decade. Luster sparkles remarkably well despite deep patina, and flickers of faded orange luster at the obverse rims spill over into the fields on the reverse. Shrewd observers will find a diagonal pair of shallow, oblong depressions in the obverse right field -- the only noticeable abrasions. The three-dimensional effect of Robert Scot's artwork is enhanced by threads of pretty neon-blue iridescence, especially as it intertwines with the wreath on the reverse.

Evidently Breen's die-state I since the die clash behind the hair and beneath the ribbons is clearly defined, while there is little evidence of obverse die rust mentioned for later die-states. ... |
