Lot Title:
(circa1779 - 1780) Rhode Island Ship Token, Wreath Below Ship. NGC VF-20 BN.
Description:
The significance of NGC's "wreath below ship" is intriguing. In the original die, the word "vlugtende" (fleeing) was mistakenly engraved in that area, implying that the British Admiral's flagship was fleeing battle(!), when in fact the opposite was true. It was the Americans in retreat. The tokens were intended to serve as propaganda, indicating lack of courage and organization within the American Continental army, as it was running from battle. To correct the misunderstanding, a wreath was inscribed over the lettering, and coins that already been struck with the incorrect legend where scraped to remove the offending word. This is a gorgeous example with lovely, dark chocolate patina and bold details. All four rows of (fleeing) soldiers are present, though the top row is vague, per the level of wear from circulation.
