Lot Title:
1721-H (La Rochelle Mint) Copper Sou or Nine Deniers (Breen 261, R.3) PCGS VF-25.
Description:
The 9-Deniers copper, struck at the Rochelle Mint, is considered a somewhat tougher Colonial type coin, but is an important member of that series since it was actually intended for circulation in North America. Of particular note for this example is the excellent, glossy mahogany-brown surface quality, a substantial benefit for the collector used to seeing corroded examples. Numerous tiny pits are strewn across the presumed obverse, while the date side is smooth and suffers merely a few such production aberrations. Most of the dentilation is missing, and a combination of undersized planchet and an off-center strike is the reason that peripheral legends fall off the planchet. It is virtually impossible to decipher the high "precision" of the PCGS VF-25 grade, since there are no published grading standards that delineate grades to the degree of accuracy at five point increments, but suffice it to say that this is a lovely coin, certainly an upgrade to many collectors' Colonial type sets.
