Lot Title:

1766 William Pitt Halfpenny (Breen 251, Betts 519, R.4, 78.7 grains). VF/planchet flake.
|
Description:
|
William Pitt is famed as a colonist who, alongside Benjamin Franklin, fought to have the Stamp Act of 1765 repealed in the colonies, and of course, the city of Pittsburgh is named in his honor. These tokens were likely produced in 1766 to commemorate his success, and presumably were struck in England, since the statement "RESTORER OF COMMERCE" and "THANKS TO THE FRIENDS OF LIBERTY AND TRADE" reflect British attitudes toward repealing the Stamp Act. Merchants wanted to facilitate unrestrained trade with the colonies, whereas colonists desired repeal of the act on the principles of freedom and liberty. This example is struck a little off center such that the obverse is a bit low, causing parts of "1766" and "NO STAMPS" to fall off the edge (the date looks like "1700"), and correspondingly on the reverse, about a third of the edge lettering is virtually off the flan. A prominent planchet crack has flaked on the obverse left as-struck, but strangely, adds crude charm to this wonderfully original piece. Sharpness is very close to XF except for the centering issues, with a net grade of very-fine seemingly appropriate.
This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.
