Lot Title:

Undated (C. 1694) London Elephant Token (Breen 186) Thick Planchet/God Preserve London. NGC AU-55 BN.
Description:
Altogether, seven die marriages exist for elephant tokens, three of them represented by the most common reverse stating "GOD PRESERVE LONDON", and the most common version is known on both thin and thick planchets. The latter is by far the more common version, and represented by the present lot, as stated on the NGC insert, although "Hodder 2-B" is not mentioned. Although believed to have been produced for circulation in England, the Carolina and New England versions were apparently struck to increase interest in the colonies, thus the association of the elephant token as an American colonial. At the AU level, these seem to be undervalued coins, and this particular example is a beauty, with very little wear evident on either of the caramel-smooth sides. There are none of the planchet fissures present as is usually seen on the type, and the rim disturbances seen on the left are common to almost all elephant tokens, apparently a manufacturing characteristic, and not indicative of damage. While the elephant motif is anatomically ludicrous, with his highly arched back and long, catlike tail, the details are handsomely executed for this particular example. Fields are beautifully subdued by original mahogany-brown patina.
