(About The Images)
1836 Block 8, Head of '37. PCGS MS-64 (secure plus). 1836 Block 8, Head of '37. PCGS MS-64 (secure plus).
Lot Title: 1836 Block 8, Head of '37. PCGS MS-64 (secure plus).
Description: Fields are unusually luminous for a classic-head type gold coin, with shimmering luster that approaches ideal tortoise-shell texture. While considered a rather common early gold type coin in mint-state, better grade pieces are acutely scarce, with PCGS population reports showing only 10 at this level, and 4 graded higher (NGC has graded none even at MS-64). Strike quality is interesting, because the obverse stars and dentilation are fully brought up with surprising precision, as are the eagle's wing and neck feathers, yet the central areas are somewhat soft, since Liberty's hair curls over the ear lack ideal sharpness. But examination with a loupe fails to reveal any but the most trivial micro-abrasions, and there is not a single spot or stain to detract.

1003The Midwest Summer Sale 2011 on 07/29/2011$3,000.00
1836 BLOCK 8. NGC MS-60.
Nicer than what might usually be expected of the basal "UNC" grade, this quarter-eagle displays exemplary detail and undeniable panache, with the appeal driven by decent luster and mark-free surfaces....
938The Midwest Summer Sale 2010 on 07/23/2010$1,000.00
1836 Block 8. NGC AU-50.
The surfaces are absolutely immaculate from the standpoint of original quality, since the ashy-grey patina remains entirely intact from the last hundred and fifty years or so. What a delight to look...
730The Collectors' Auction 2009 on 10/16/2009$1,300.00
1836 Block 8. ANACS AU-58 details/cleaned.
Too often, it seems that ANACS correctly decides not to straight-grade a coin, but then applies an incongruous disclaimer. In the case of this 1836 quarter-eagle, AU-58 details/cleaned is stated, yet...
1064The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/24/2009$975.00
1836 Block 8. PCGS AU-53.
A bit more pale than would be ideal, but surprisingly active luster glimmers from all around each side. The lack of central details can be mostly attributed to strike characteristics, though of...
280The Collector's Auction on 10/20/2006$600.00
1836 Block 8. NGC XF-45.
A charming specimen from this short lived, popular series showing a light yellow-gold aspect. Some faint hairlines are observed on this somewhat softly struck issue. It still retains an admirable...
353The Midwest Summer Sale 2006 on 07/21/2006$425.00
1836 Block 8. XF-40.
Always popular as a type, this specimen depicts pale yellow-gold surfaces. There are a couple problems to note This first is a minuscule rim cut at four o'clock on the obverse and correspondingly on...
