Lot Title:
1825 (N-6, R.2) NGC MS-62 BN.
Description:
The die-crack that connects the two Ns in the denomination is very faint and identifies this as N-6, a fairly common Newcomb variety not indicated on the slab. Heavy chocolate-brown patina dominates this cent, and gains density at the edge of all devices, instilling a distinctive low contrast two-tone appearance that emboldens all the major elements. Those elements are struck with razor-sharp precision that will garner praise from most copper collectors, and a single dash on Liberty's cheek is the only contact mark of consequence. Given the sharpness and surprisingly fine luster still present in the fields, one might wonder why the grade is only MS-62 BN, and the answer is contingent upon examination of the surfaces. The patina, which is rather dusty in appearance, reveals the faintest hint of verdigris in places under close examination. On the whole though, any doubts about this coin's positive attributes can be laid to rest, as the patina is stable, and the overall appearance quite pleasing for a large cent of this vintage.
