(About The Images)

Lot Title: 1805/4 (O-102, R.3) AU details/scratched/questionable color.
Description: 1805/4 is a very popular overdate due to the ease with which that feature may be seen, even on well circulated specimens. This example possesses considerable detail, including nearly full definition of all the finest hair tresses, and a full motto on the reverse, though striking characteristics are responsible for the erratic detail on the eagle's right (observed) side. To fiendish regret, some extreme process of cleaning has caused the obverse to become scored with innumerable hairlines, almost to the point of being profusely scratched. Subsequent effort to lessen the effects of such abominable treatment seems to have entailed polishing both sides, since the higher relief details are now glossy smooth. The entire coin has been retoned in wild, panoramic color, yet as odious as all these actions may sound, the arm's length appearance is not nearly as bad as it could have been. The coin probably left circulation actually with AU details intact, though all the trouble it has been through may have reduced technical definition to the XF level.

This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.
