Lot Title: 1802 (O-101, R.3, 1973 Terrell Collection) AU details/repaired/questionable color.
Description: (ex-Terrell Collection, 5/18/1973) Q. David Bowers was approached in the mid-1960s to assemble a collection for investment purposes, to be comprised of type coins, and it is interesting that a high-grade 1802 half-dollar would have been selected for inclusion, since it is a key date, and generally not considered a "type" coin. The Terrell Collection was sold in 1973 (at considerable profit for the investor), and an envelope from that sale is included here. Because so few mint-state examples exist (two or three), very little comparison is possible for assessing strike, yet the hair tresses and the eagle's feathers share very sharp, fine details. Overall, this coin is very close to mint-state -- but where is the luster? Closer examination of the fields reveals myriad curved parallel lines that are reminiscent of a coin that has been whizzed, but that doesn't seem to be exactly the case. At any rate, whatever process altered this coin has completely and thoroughly eradicated all signs of mint luster, and one can only imagine how exceedingly raw the surfaces would have been afterward. Subsequent retoning could have happened in any manner, and would obviously have to be considered non-original. Adjustment marks can be seen on the reverse, which is hardly unexpected since 1801s and 1802s saw more than their fair share of planchet weight adjustment.

This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.
