Lot Title:

1797 '97 Rev.- Stems. AU BN.

Description:
|
Copper specialists may find this to be quite an exciting coin, as it combines interesting die-state characteristics of two separate Sheldon die-marriages. S-130 has a curved break on the left obverse rim behind the ribbon, but Noyes does not mention a long, spindly die crack in the right field in the die state listings for the variety, and the left die break is fully formed -- as should be expected for S-131. However, the reverse unquestionably belongs to S-130. S-131, on the other hand, does include mention of the spindly crack on the right, making it likely that this S-130 was one of the very last coins struck with the pair of dies, prior to remarriage of the obverse die. From standpoint of grade and other such matters, this is without doubt a terrific 1797, fully glossy brown and thoroughly imbued with deep walnut patina. The fields display considerable flowline texture, and persistent examination will locate the most faintly perceptible traces of mint red surrounding the portrait. AU coins enter into the condition census for S-130, and this example garners an AU-50 BN commercial grade, with an EAC assessment that may also be right on the cusp of 50.
This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.
