1797 Gripped Edge - '96 Rev. (S-120b, R.2) Good and 1799 "Electrotype" of S-189/S-174 mule Fine.
|
Description:
|
An improbable pairing of coins finds a genuine 1797 S-120b "gripped edge" large cent accompanied by an electrotype mule of a 1799/1798 large cent. The 1797 has solid G-4 details with full date, full LIBERTY, and about half the reverse lettering legible, although the denomination does not show. Surface quality is quite nice for the grade. The electrotype combines a 1799 S-189 obverse with a 1798 S-174 reverse to produce manifestation of a die pairing that does not exist. The visual appearance is remarkable for a "1799" since both sides are smooth and attractive, with lovely caramel patina that would be near-miraculous for any 1799. However, the "coin" miserably fails a ring test and can be easily bent with the bare hand (so be careful!) -- telltale signs of base metal composition. Two item lot.
This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.

This cent is very well struck for a 1797. The surfaces suffer from a number of small marks. All detail is very strong, and if graded on detail alone, XF-40 would be appropriate. The color is a very... |
