Lot Title:
1795 Talbot, Allum & Lee Cent, Lettered Edge (Breen 1035, Fuld 1). NGC MS-62 BN.
Description:
Minted by Peter Kempson's mint in Birmingham, England, the Talbot Allum & Lee copper tokens were struck along the physical dimensions of a regal British halfpenny and accepted readily in commerce. So many were produced that when the United States mint became desperate for coinage stock, tokens were cut down for use as 1795 half-cents "without pole" (actually struck in 1796), and 1797 half-cents. The example offered here is uncirculated and lightly handled, and bears an interesting circular ring of brown stain on the obverse, perfectly centered. It is a well struck example, with all nine square portholes struck up on the ship.
