Lot Title:

1795 Talbot, Allum & Lee Lettered Edge Cent (Breen 1035, 145.1 grains) VF.
|
Description:
|
Fans of the type-1 Standing Liberty quarter may not realize that the Talbot Allum & Lee coppers, struck in Birmingham, England but circulated widely in New York, feature an effigy of Liberty standing, with her right breast exposed. The lettered edge clearly spells out the purpose of the tokens: WE PROMISE TO PAY THE BEARER ONE CENT, while an inscription on the reverse tells where: THE STORE OF TALBOT ALLUM & LEE NEW YORK. It appears that the 1795 issue is scarcer than its counterpart of the year before, and this is a pleasing example with dusky mahogany undertones and a splashes of deep walnut brown on either side of Liberty. Centering and sharpness are both excellent, with eight of nine portholes on the ship visible, and the waves well defined. 145.1 grains and easily Choice Very Fine.
This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.
