Lot Title: 1791 Washington Small Eagle Cent, "United States Of America" lettered edge (Breen 1217, D & H Middlesex 1050, R.3, 219.1 grains) VF/rim bruises.
Description: Realization that the new America would need circulating coinage, and sensing a possible financial opportunity, firms in Britain created "samples" to offer the new government in hopes of gaining contracts for production of coins. For this particular copper coin, struck by Obadiah Westwood's mint in Birmingham, Washington's effigy figures prominently on the obverse, regaled in military clothing, and accompanied by a large eagle with upraised wings on the reverse. George Washington himself objected to the coins as being too monarchical, especially for a nation recently founded on the concept of self-government, and further, he disdained the idea of contract minting. He and like-minded colonists wished to see the United States for its own mint, a point of national pride. Thus, these well made coins were never seriously considered despite a large number having been exported to the new world. This is a beautifully original example the features caramel-brown surfaces and details quite close to the XF level and nicely augmented by contrasting darker tone. Rim bumps are minor on each side, but too numerous to be ignored in an overall very-fine net grade.

This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.
