(About The Images)
1926-S NGC MS-64 RB. 1926-S NGC MS-64 RB.
Lot Title: 1926-S NGC MS-64 RB.
Description: Much like the buffalo nickel of the same date, 1926-S is notorious within the Lincoln cent series for poor production, and few coins display much evidence of original red color. Most existing examples, even in mint-state, are fully brown or very nearly so. Defying the odds on both counts, this cent displays about a third of the original mint-red color, along with prodigious detail supplied by a much better strike than usual for the date. While certainly not fully defined, Lincoln's hair displays considerable sharpness, and his bowtie seems to be fully delineated. Wheat stalks on the reverse display strong kernels and wheat lines, and every single letter on that side is fully elevated and firmly struck. It is interesting to note strike doubling at the tops of the digits in the date.

Amplifying all these superlatives is outstanding surface quality that lacks ticks or marks to an extent that is surprising even for the MS-64 grade level. In fact, the reverse displays essentially no evidence of handling, while the obverse has only a handful of tiny marks on the portrait. At this grade level, 1926-S is far and away scarcer than the better known 1909-S VDB, and is likely THE key to a regular-issue set. This is without doubt one of the nicest specimens available, since between them, NGC and PCGS have certified fewer than forty in a higher grade.
