1787 Fugio Copper STATES UNITED (Newman 9-Q, R.5, 140.4 grains) VF.
Description:
Rarity rating for 9-Q was at least R.6 for a number of years, but is now considered R.5 with proper attribution of additional previously unknown specimens (including one sold by Stack's with an attached jewelry loop!). Still, the coin is rare enough that, as many descriptions mention, the Norweb and Hancock collections both lacked an example. On top of simple rarity, this example of 9-Q is unequivocally attractive, as it features lovely, generally smooth brown surfaces with just occasional planchet voids, and none of the large patches of corrosion that affect many Fugio coppers. Critical to grading these colonial type coins, every single numeral on the sundial is readable, and despite a reputation for off-center examples, the date and motto are entirely on the flan due to nearly perfect alignment of the obverse, though the reverse is a bit off-center north. Nonetheless, all the rings are fully present. WE ARE ONE is barely affected by a small as-struck planchet depression left of center on the reverse, and this also affects TES on the inner ring. The edge of this coin is wonderfully free from dings, and the only post-mint distraction (and it is very minor) is the presence of a few tiny flecks of unknown dark residue in the date area. Superb color, and a real treasure for the Fugio specialist, from the Tabasco Sauce collection.
This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.
