Lot Title:
1787 Fugio Copper/Pointed Rays/States United (Newman 7-T, R.5, 160.5 grains). F.
Description:
USIN is higher than the other letters in BUSINESS, aiding quick attribution of Newman 7-T, and the well known obverse die crack is huge for this variety in this die state. The color of this Fugio is simply superb, ideally golden-tan with some moderate underlying surface darkness providing the two-toned contrast. Porosity can be seen overall, but it may have been present when the coin was struck, since it is obviously smoothed from wear, and not from unscrupulous enhancement, and there are none of the large planchet voids that plague the series. Softness on a couple of Roman numerals on the sundial mean the sharpness falls in the low range of VF, with some netting of the grade to the fine level necessary to reflect imperfect surface texture.
This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.
