(About The Images)
1799 (1800) George Washington Funeral Urn Medal in White Medal. 1799 (1800) George Washington Funeral Urn Medal in White Medal.
Lot Title: 1799 (1800) George Washington Funeral Urn Medal in White Medal.
Description: It is my express desire that my Corpse may be Interred in a private manner, without parade, or funeral Oration. So stated George Washington's last will and testament, yet his closest friends and family could neither deny nor avoid the overwhelming desire of a mourning nation which he had helped forge. Washington's casket was carried on the shoulders of his pallbearers, six colonels (Charles Simms, Dennis Ramsay, William Payne, George Gilpin, Philip Marsteller, and Charles Little), preceded in procession by "The Troops, Horse and Foot, The Clergy, the General's Horse with Saddle, Holsters, and Pistols, led by two grooms, Cyrus and Wilson in black, Music and Guard." Dozens of mourners attended the formal proceedings.

Washington had passed on December 14, 1799, and two funerals processions were held in Boston, first on February 11, 1800, the second on February 22. Jacob Perkins produced medals for both events, the two medals having similar obverses, one for the Masonic procession, and this example in white metal, made for the general procession. As it is supposed to be, the medal is holed at top and displays the type of handling and wear that make most certain that it was actually worn at the procession, and periodically afterward. The "white metal" versions of the urn medals were far less hardy than the silver examples, and this one was heavily handled, but is certainly suitable for a common-sense VG grade or so.

This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.
