(About The Images)
1884-S PCGS MS-64. 1884-S PCGS MS-64.
Lot Title: 1884-S PCGS MS-64.
Description: It is only after 1893 that the Liberty double-eagle series becomes most often represented by "common" dates. Especially in the upper mint-state grades, most issues of 1893 and prior are scarce at MS-64 (and downright rare at MS-65 and above). Most collectors who never venture into gold series do not realize this fact, because it is usually lower grade and circulated coins that exchange hands in the marketplace, and then, the vast majority of double-eagles are common. Thus, it bears prefacing the context for the current 1884-S, graded MS-64 in a PCGS holder, with this information.

Not only is this a high grade coin, but its quality is exemplified by moderately toned royal-gold surfaces that appear to retain their rich, original patina. The color is consistent side-to-side, and edge-to-edge, implying careful preservation over the past century. Gold coins with "enhanced" surfaces enter slabs on occasion, and it is always best to scrutinize any expensive gold coin, looking for welcome evidence of original surfaces. There is no doubt that this is a vintage piece, and a carbon spot lurking in the obverse lower right field attests to the original quality. Some novice collectors express grave aversion to such a surface blemish (if a tiny dot can be called a "blemish"), but since cleaning removes carbon spots, they are not the detriment that novice collectors often think they are, if original quality is important!

From a technical point of view, few negatives accompany this piece. Strike quality is simply outstanding, with pinpoint sharp strands of hair and precise delineation of the lines in the shield. Feathers in the eagle's left (observed) wing are a touch softer than those on the right, however. As expected of a coin classified near the "gem" level, gratifying luster dances about in perfect cartwheel fashion, providing impetus for the pleasing eye-appeal.

1884-S PCGS AU-55.
The mintmark is nearly a blob on the reverse, being mostly filled in as-struck. Plenty of luster zooms around lightly worn patches in the field, affirming the strong AU grade.

1884-S PCGS MS-62.
Just a wee bit on the chippy side, but that is hardly unexpected of a large gold coin in the MS-62 grade range. Liberty's cheek displays the customary abrasions that account for the grade.

1884-S ANACS MS-60.
Hairlines swipe across the lower obverse right field and hold the grade back to MS-60. The obverse strike is very sharp, however.

1884-S PCGS AU-58.
Unlike its silver dollar counterpart, the 1884-S double-eagle remains common in grades right up through the lower UNC levels. This AU-58 displays extensive luster that is just faintly affected by...

1884-S PCGS MS-62.
This captivating San Francisco issue emanates a vibrant radiance from velvetlike surfaces. The observed surface marks are congruent for the grade, and the strike is rather significant.
