Lot Title:
Undated (1795) Washington Liberty & Security Penny, "Asylum" Edge (Breen 1254, Baker 30, R.2, 296.3 grains). VF.
Description:
Struck in Birmingham, England essentially as samples in hopes of gaining a contract for future coinage for the United States, the undated Liberty & Security pennies were exported in large numbers to America in two basic types. This is the undated larger type, struck prior to 1796, with lettered edge stating "AN ASYLUM FOR THE OPPRESS'D OF ALL NATIONS". Sharpness of very-fine with trivial rim bumps and superb surface color, and very possibly used as a pocket piece. Fine is the appropriate overall net grade.
This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.
